Frida In Los Angeles
Frida sought out her fellow Mexican countryman, artist Alfredo Ramos Martinez. An influential artist and educator, Ramos Martinez had left his country and settled permanently in Los Angeles in 1929. Ramos Martinez was pleased by Frida’s outreach; her husband, Diego Rivera, had replaced Ramos Martinez as director of the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes when he resigned in preparation to his planned move to Los Angeles. They arranged to meet at Scripps College in Claremont, just east of Los Angeles, the site where Ramos Martinez’ most recent murals were just being completed. He wanted to show Frida this latest work. The meeting gave both artists a chance to talk leisurely about politics and art, and the changes occurring in their respective cities of residences. After their long talk, Frida sat in a quiet contemplation of Martinez’ work.
